Quick story. I bought summer movie passes for the kids (10 movies, $5) and Thursday was our first day. The boys were stoked to see TMNT. I was less stoked, but whatever, it kills 2 hours. I should mention that several moms in our ward are in on the Thursday Summer Movie Fun. We met up with all the other families and settle down in our seats just as the preview are starting. Everyone was excited, what with the prospect of talking mutated turtles, personal popcorn and blue Icees. The first sign that something was amiss was that all the previews were for PG-13 and R rated movies. But, we let it slide since the movie we were watching was old, so maybe they just threw in random previews. Then the lights dimmed and the feature film started.
Cue the Sex and the City music please. Seriously. We were dying. 5 moms jump up to go get a manager, we were all laughing until Sarah Jessica Parker comes on the big screen in nothing but her bra and panties. That's when I yelled to the boys to shut their eyes and ears. The next 30 seconds showed a couple of dudes kissing and two girls in the street fighting, one of which drops the mother of all swear words. In fact, she used the word "mother" in front of it. Can you believe it? There were 40+ people in there, 80% were children. They got it shut off and the manager came out apologizing. Evidently, the girl taking the tickets told us all the wrong theater. Kind of a big mistake. They could have started any other movie and it probably wouldn't have been that bad.
I've never considered myself prudish or naive, but I couldn't believe how horrible you can make a movie in the first 45 seconds. Makes me really glad I don't watch rated R movies anymore. Maybe I'm more sensitive to it now, or because the boys were with me.
Anyway, we were shuffled to the right screen and the boys loved the Turtles, even though we missed the first 15 minutes. Afterward, we were given 3 free passes to the concession stand for our next visit. I guess personal popcorn and blue Icees are considered acceptable compensation.

That is really funny! Well sort of...at least it is a good story to blog about. Isn't that what we are looking for now out of life experiences??
Nothing says summer fun like taking little boys to see "Sex in the City".
OH. MY. GOSH. I would have been mortified! Blue Icees are a good compensation, but free movies would be better. :)

I cannot believe that, Maka would have beat up the all the workers...
Glad nobody was too tramatized by it, but what I want to know is what the kids said about it all, and about what they saw...
I think that is so sadly funny! You are brave to take on the task of the movie thing with 3 kids. I considered it but thought I would rather sit around my house and try to stay sane!
I am going to tell that story to everyone I know! That is so funny but yet so not funny!
Thanks for starting my day off with a laugh. Forget Indiana Jones - let's see Sex in the City!! Totally kidding.
I am sorry that happened - experience never to forget. I had that happen once, but instead of "What Dreams May Come", it was "Jack Frost". That story isn't as cool as yours.
This is freaking crazy, but your kids will probably be exposed to something at some point-in-time. It was glad that you could be there for them and demonstrate your reaction that it was not appropriate. But, thank goodness for free popcorn and blue Icees!
That is crazy! But funny too!
That is too funny! Sad thing is I wanted to see that movie, but since it was rated R, no go!
This could be an interesting start to the $5.00 summer movies of 2008! Hope next Thursday is a little less traumatic for the Moms!
wow. I think the rest was summed up by everyone elses comments.
Ok, that us hillarious! -I mean, not really though. I would be freaking out about my boys seeing that too. Ya, that is a pretty big mistake-but hey, at least you got the free concession passes!
No way! Really?!?! I would've had somebody's head or job for that one. Do you know how hard I work to keep that from my kids and then WHAMO!!! Dang! Of course that wouldn't be very Mormon like and that's one of the reasons to be mad, is because we're all Mormon and everything... Have they talked about it since? I gotta be sure to let Craig read this one and get his opinion without my 2 cents first!
Oh my!!! Of all movies it had to be that one! Enjoy your icees and popcorn in the future- yummy.
I hope that the kids aren't having nightmares after SATC. I would be!! I don't like the Turtles either so that would probably give me a nightmare too. I'll take Antiques Roadshow over both and it's free!!
You are so funny. The girls in our ward do the same thing. Is your beach really Del Mar. We are going to have to get together really soon. Lets plan something.
