Dad's and Awkward Family Photos

So Father's day has come and gone (as did Mother's Day, but let's not get particular). We "surprised" Trevor with our over-played breakfast in bed routine. He seemed genuinely pleased.

Then, we gave him his gift. Earlier that month, he had bought himself a new toolbox for Father's Day so I wasn't required to put any effort into that aspect of the day. But my buddy, Heather, had de beeest (read with a Nacho Libre accent) idea that I had to steal. As a back story, her husband and mine once spent an hour on the awkward family photos website. They were hysterical. It's truly a kind of humor that Trevor and Kirk can appreciate. Heather's master plan? Do a photo shoot with our kids, awkward family photo style. We joined forces with fellow buddy, Jamie (a la my family photog and hairstylist guru). Here's the result...

At first, he didn't get it. He was trying to act all happy that we had screened a shirt for him with the kids on it. Then when he looked at the individual pics of the kids on the back...well, you can see his reaction.

The front of the shirt.

The back.

Happy Father's Day to the best (albeit awkward) Daddy anyone could ask for! We love you!

My Children's Dad

I am so glad that he's their dad. I couldn't ask for a better father to my children. Any man who can appreciate a card that yells, "Are you crying? There's no crying in baseball!" is alright in my book. Trevor is definitely alright.

Fathers

~Trev and the boys. This cute card was made by Miss Heather.~

This Father's Day was kind of a dud. I feel bad. Sure, he got his breakfast in bed. Sure, he got a card and a present, and there were homemade cinnamon rolls for him at church, but I just feel like something was lacking. I'm pretty sure part of it was Preston. He's been with his cousin, Connor, since Friday and isn't coming home until tomorrow. I miss him. We all do. Abby asks where he is everyday.

I also think that Father's Day didn't match up to the awesome perfectness of Mother's Day. I blame my belly on that. Trevor was WAY too helpful for his "day off". It just doesn't seem fair does it? After church, we had a couple of hours before we were due at his parents for dinner (flank steak, mmmm). I vowed to have him relax and watch the U.S. Open. It worked for about 20 minutes until the missionaries came by and stayed over an hour. We love those boys, but I still felt guilty that Trevor didn't get his "me time".

Dinner was awesome. There's no other way to put it. All the cousins played really well together, but, it was weird not to have Preston there amongst them (can you tell I'm homesick for him?). Again, Trevor was WAY too helpful. I'm just getting to that "she's useless" stage I guess. He's been a good sport about my lack of mobility. But he does laugh at me a lot.

I think I'll take this post in a much more sentimental direction now. I love my husband. We've been through so much together. We are going through a lot now. But through it all, we end up stronger as a couple. Sure there are frustrations and stresses and unknowns, but he is my constant. I know he'll be there, no matter how crazy or irrational (don't be shocked) I may be. I don't deserve him. He says the same thing about me, but I'm the only one who's being honest. I truly love him to pieces.

I wanted to post a little ode to Kent today, too. He's another one that I feel I've neglected on Father's Day. His card is still on my counter.

~Preston Kent circa...a long time ago.~

I love my dad. I'm like my dad. We're both loud and a bit obnoxious. We're both insufferable know-it-all's, but in his case, he actually does know it all. We're both fairly athletic. He wrote me a letter once and in it he said that we were both masters of sarcasm. It's true. I believe we are both passionate people. You'll always know what we are thinking, whether we are mad, or sad or in a great mood. We both like to be right, but in his case he usually is. We both enjoy a good meal. He's really witty and funny, and I attempt to be. We're both out-going and opinionated. We both are intelligent, but in his case, a little more so. He also gave me my appreciation of the Beatles.

~Dad circa 1969~

I've always looked up to Dad. He has always been a hard worker (a trait I definitely didn't get) but always wanted us to have fun memories.

We went boating and camping and took a trip nearly every summer. I remember him trying to stop on several side trips. I can't remember if they were just view points on the side of the freeway or what, but we were all complaining about the many detours.

Once, he had us walk, for what felt like miles and miles in downtown Hollywood to show us "something really cool". It ended up being the corner of Hollywood and Vine. One of the most famous crime ridden streets at the time, and he wanted to make sure we got a picture there. I'm pretty sure none of us were looking very happy in it. I walked past that street corner in March and had to smile. I even took a picture.

We always listened to oldies in the car. The words, "who sings this", came out of his mouth frequently. We were never right. I know them now, though. He would also sing along. It was never pleasant, but I miss it.

Whenever we stopped at a gas station for a drink, he would mix a bunch of different sodas in the cup and have us try to guess what the cocktail was. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to gross us all out so that he could have the drink to himself. Just so you know, Coke doesn't go well with Orange Crush. See, I told you he was funny.

Father's Day

Well, it wasn't flashy, but it was definitely a man's day. We woke Trevor up late, gave him his presents and Carson serenaded him with a rendition of "I'm So Glad When Daddy Comes Home". Ever our little singer, that one! Then we made his annual Father's Day Breakfast of Eggs Benedict. Abby was sick, so I stayed home from church with her and LET Trevor take the boys. I'm cool like that.

~Sneaking in on Daddy~Opening homemade presents~

Seriously, though, he was pampered when he got home. He requested more eggs, parked himself on his favorite spot on the couch and watched the U.S. Open, Angel game, and Laker game. All that without a nagging wife or whiny kids blocking his view. He even ate dinner there. It was about that time that he professed his love of Father's Day. He deserves it! He's been working so hard. He's been through a lot the last few years and I'm so proud of his awesome attitude. Thanks for being a stellar dad and for putting up with me! WE LOVE YOU!

~He's so glad when Daddy comes home~

And to all the other Dads in my life, I love you and I wouldn't be the person I am today if it weren't for you. That's right, I'm blaming you. Thank you for everything and Happy Father's Day!
