The Day They Almost Died

I'm laying it all out there right now and I'm hoping that you'll all be loyal and not turn Trevor and I in. Just in case you really are feeling a pull toward the phone and have DCFS on speed dial, let me remind you that we do, in fact, love our children and the guilt we have over this incident is in the extreme. I swear it.

You're all aware we moved on January 15, a Saturday. The very next Thursday I was on my way to Vegas for Amy's wedding (another post, another day). I didn't get home until Saturday evening and there was just sooo much to be done in the new house and Trevor had been working a lot. Add that to every other excuse in the book and maybe you'll understand that we really had no other choice but to skip church on Sunday (BTW, you always have a choice).

The day started out fine. We got good jump on the kitchen. We decided that our bedroom would be the next logical place to unpack. The logic being that I needed a haven to retreat to when the overwhelming path of boxes overtook my sanity. You see, it just made good sense. One of the greatest things about the new house is a decent backyard for the kiddies to play in. The were all out there when all this logical unpacking was commencing. It was all going so well. We have a little balcony off our bedroom that overlooks the backyard. Every so often we'd glance down and check on our brood. All was well.

Then it wasn't.

Preston's little voice bellowed up at us from inside the house. Something about paint and Abby and Will???

"WHAT?!!!" We replied. By the time we got out our bedroom door (1.3 seconds later), Abby was already upstairs in the bathroom attempting to wash what looked like purple paint off of her hands and feet. That's when we saw it. Little purple footprints up the stairs and down the hall all over the brand new carpet in our RENTED home. Are you freaking kidding me?!

I would love to say I have blocked out the next fifteen minutes from my temporal lobe, but I haven't. I can't. It's branded in there like a hot iron on a starched shirt. We screamed and we yelled and we...broke blood vessels in our hands and the white parts of our eyes. It wasn't pretty.

We threw (yes, that can partly be taken literally) Carson and Abby into the tub (lukewarm water) and instructed them to start scrubbing. Then we went downstairs to get the story from Preston. He's the most guilt ridden of our children and therefore, can be counted on to give the most accurate and honest report of any given incident.

As it turns out, William started it. Automatically, he's released of any guilt. 18 month olds have no common sense worth mentioning. He found a small can of wood stain, yes, wood stain, on the side of the house and because he's 18 months old and the devil in a diaper, carried it across the yard where Preston intercepted it. All should have been well at this point, if only my 9 1/2 year old had as much sense as my 18 month old.

Instead of putting said stain up and out of reach of his baby brother, or informing a parent, Preston proceed to chuck the can of stain across the yard. What on earth does that accomplish? We were baffled. Couldn't William have just walked back over there and grabbed it again? What was the point? Preston couldn't find the point either.

Miraculously, the lid of the can stayed on. But then again, folks, I have a 7 year old that has as much common sense as his older brother. He walked over to the can, picked it up and took off the lid. Not expecting such a thin liquid, the force of the lid removal sloshed the stain up and over the rim of the can and all over the front of Carson completely covering the front of his brand new Nebraska football jersey. That's when Trevor had to bite his knuckles to keep from weeping. Feeling and seeing this, Carson panicked and dropped the can onto the lawn. Stain went everywhere.

Seeing a commotion and having to be a part of it, William waddled over and found his artistic side, by finger painting the grass.

Preston, ever the third parent in our home, grabbed the baby and yelled at Carson to help him clean Will up. They walked into the house (leaving a discriminating purple trail behind them) down the hallway and into the downstairs bathroom. After scrubbing and scrubbing Will and finding it impossible to remove the STAIN from his hands, they realize that they're going to have to face the wrath of mom. At that moment, Abby (my daughter that I thought had more common sense than all three of her brothers put together, but was sadly mistaken) came into the house ankle deep in purple wood stain.

That leads us back to the beginning of our story. Abby, trying to find me, took her little purple feet up the stairs and down the hallway and the fury began.

First things first, the carpet. We had to save the carpet. We called my dad. He's the master of staining carpets. This man once rebuilt an engine on our family room floor. No dice. Dad didn't answer. On to Trevor's dad. He was at church too, but his mom was home and she had more common sense than Trevor or I who were still in our blinding red fury and referred us to Trevor's Uncle Don, the carpenter.

Uncle Don saved us. Lacquer thinner, he said. It'll take out the stain without hurting the carpet and you can use it on the kids skin too. Perfect. The ox was in the mire and I was off to Home Depot for Lacquer thinner.

When I got home the lukewarm water was now cold but that was part of the punishment. I made them wait it out while I administered CPR to the carpet. It worked. Like magic. In a matter of minutes it was gone without a trace save the overwhelming fumes of the lacquer thinner.

It was at this point that Trevor and I were secretly whispering to each other that we may have over reacted, especially since there was no lasting harm done. Guilt was slowly creeping into our hearts. But we still had to put up a strong front for the little miscreants.

I walked into the bathroom with the thinner and a towel.

"You're next Carson. I sure hope this doesn't sting and burn." I threw that last part in for good effect. Sometimes fear can be an ally, I thought. I've used it before.

"Really mom?"

"I don't know. Maybe. Most likely."

"I'm scared mom."

"I would be too. But, hey, that's why you should never ever play with paint."

"I'm so nervous."

Abby pipes in. "Mommy I'm scared too."

"You should be." I'm so tricky like that. It's not going to hurt. Uncle Don said so...and then I put the thinner dipped towel to his skin.

The stain came right off and the big red blister came right up. Carson started to scream. Horrible pain filled pleadings of mercy. I frantically started scrubbing the area (his tummy) with soap and water, but the cries didn't stop. Trevor scooped him up and ran him to our shower to get a better stream of water on him.

Abby turned to me with tears in her little eyes and said, "I don't want any of that Mommy." I was sick with myself. I'm such a horrid, horrid mother. Carson came back stoic, but shaken. And then the power shifted in their favor. Warm towels, loving words and many, many, MANY apologies later, we finally got everyone settled. They forgave us. They always do when we're idiots.

We confessed to our parents, who were surprisingly supportive, even offering up their own shameful past experiences. In my parents case, Holly and Heather spilt a gallon of bleach on the carpet of our new home, when they were 7 years old. Instead of getting Mom and Dad, they ran down the hallway, into the bathroom, to get TOWELS to clean it up. Besides ruining the towels, they ran through the puddle of bleach and left little bleachy footprints all the way to the bathroom and back. When I asked Mom if she and Dad reacted badly (begged her to tell me that they had, actually) she reminded me of the fist-sized whole in the wall of that house. Dad's fist in fact. Mom covered it with a mirror. I have to say, at least he hit the wall and not them, and they had a better excuse to be insane with fury than I did. The stain came out of the carpet. Bleach does not. When I told Mom that their reaction made me feel better, she reminded me that it didn't make it right. Such a mom thing to say.

So to sum up, my kids have no common sense, but they come by it honestly.

Sigh...At Least It's Good Blog Material

He wanted a beard like Dad's. FYI Dad is clean shaven and has been for several months now.

P.S. We can't get it all off.

Awards, Glue, & Love

In my ranting over Trevor's vast (roll eyes) threshold of pain, I overlooked a couple of events this past week. So here they are, in backward order.

Valentines Day. It was lovely. We always make it a family occasion since Trev and I pamper ourselves two days prior. Here's the usual candlelit dinner (Trevor still in his jammies). The kids got Valentines from us and Preston surprised us with one too. So sweet, huh?

Abby at the doctor. She's all into my wallet and purse/diaper bag lately. It's cute for a second or two.

Carson snuck into his bathroom to "do" his hair. The gel I use on the boys is called "glue", for good reason. Carson used half the tube. Not cute for even a second.

Preston got a reading award at school! After the year he's been having, this was an awesome surprise. We got to go watch an assembly honoring him, albeit for 30 seconds, but still. He's being honored! We're proud of him! Carson got sick of the whole thing pretty quick. He's successfully avoiding picture time. To top it all off, he got a gift certificate to Que Pasa. This is the California version of Cafe Rio:) Fabulous! We'll be redeeming this tonight for FHE.

Skip ahead to the 50 second mark to see Preston get his award. I won't lie to you, it may be one of those videos that only a mom can enjoy.

Still Laughing

Sunday: Church, nap, choir practice, met up with family to see Christmas lights, so fun! One neighborhood goes all out and draws crowds of thousands. It's free and amazing!
Monday: Took the two youngest to the doctor for a checkup, drank a Diet Coke on the way there, meanwhile, gas light comes on, I laughed. Insurance problems threatened to send us home, but we worked it out, I laughed. Carson got 4 shots (after each "Ow! That hurt!", I laughed), Abby got 3 (after each "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!"), two hours later, I laughed, we met Trevor for lunch where I had 2 Diet Cokes. Drove home with the gas light on, I nervously laughed. Made it home barely in time for me to RUSH in to the bathroom (product of the 3 previous Diet Cokes), I laughed. Attempted to drive to Sam's Club to get gas, but ran out in front of Preston's school, fairly convenient since school was set to end in 20 minutes, I laughed. Called dear friend, Heather, who picked us up, drove us home to get gas can, drove us to gas station, drove us back to our car, I laughed. I then successfully gassed up and drove home. Helped with homework and gave up on dinner. Realized I forgot my purse in Heather's van, I really laughed. Trevor got home and we settled into our evening routine (me online, him on XBOX), I was talking to my mom when my foot started itching...

Tuesday: Spent the day trying to ignore my randomly swollen, red, hived out foot and fighting off urge to sleep, a side effect of the Benydryl. No bite, no weird food, no detergent or soap change, just one of those mysteries, I laughed less than yesterday.

Wednesday: Cleaned up kitchen mess from yesterday's less than stellar housekeeping. Started a load of laundry. Trip to WalMart to buy ingredients for Christmas treats. On to Target to buy gift for Preston's teacher. Home again, put Abby down and put a movie on for Carson. Started making Almond Roca and Carson decides to play outside. Carson comes back in requesting to be called "Muddy boy" with good reason, I laughed, mopped, and put him in the tub. Cleaned up Almond Roca mess. Carson wants to make chocolate chip cookies, meanwhile Abby figures out she can open cabinets and empties the one under the sink, I laughed. I just pull out 2nd to last batch and it's time to pick up Pres. Abby throws up in car seat, no one laughs. Throw her in tub, put Preston in charge of watching her (only 3 inches of water) while I hose down the car seat and her clothes, I chuckle. Put Abby down for 2nd nap. Start another load of laundry. Finished last batch of cookies and cleaned up cookie mess. Started dinner and fed family. Cleaned up dinner, laughed that I've now cleaned the kitchen 4 times. Played Monopoly with family, laughed a LOT. Abby throws up on kitchen rug, no one laughs. Hose down rug and start 3rd load of laundry, another chuckle. Put kids down and send Trevor off on his "man date" (him, guys from the ward and his dad), you can all laugh, put Abby down for the night and settled into my bed, with my computer and my Friends re-runs and a half full bottle of Sparkling Cider.

A more lighthearted post...

I didn't mean to make so many of you cry! If it makes you feel better, I was teary when I wrote it. I've been feeling a little sappy lately (tonight's no different). But, I thought you'd like to see what Abby's been up to this week. Poor baby's cutting 3 teeth and they keep going up and down and won't come through. She's been pretty sweet, but I can tell she's uncomfortable. She won't nap. It's 7:10pm and she just went down for her 2nd, sort of, nap. Her first one, at 10:30am, was only 40 minutes long. This is a girl who takes 2, 1 hour naps and 1, 2 hour nap. Crap, she's crying again. Guess I lied. She isn't down for her 2nd nap!

On a different, less painful, note, she's moving non-stop now. She's way more mobile than the boys ever were, or maybe I just don't remember back that far. She pulls herself up on the couch and walks all the way around it. She does the same thing to the walls. She's even crawling up the stairs. We're screwed.

Her noises are getting funnier too. She still growls when she's excited, that's always good for a laugh. The boys got a microphone thingy at Cory and Gina's wedding (it echos when you talk in it). She "sings" in it and gets mesmerized by her own voice. I know she's a superstar in the making, even if no one else does. Oh, and I can't forget the Dadadadadada. So, she loves him more than me. Whatever. She also had her first biter biscuit yesterday. I decided these were developed by men. No woman would have made a food this slimy, messy or nasty. She loved it.

So, here's my baby. Pretty cute, right? Right?

3 Year Old for Lease

Sweet, funny, handsome, but mischievous 3 year old for lease. Length of time unknown, approximately 2 years. Child has fondness for Disney Cars, Buzz Lightyear/Woody, SuperWhy and Peanut Butter (See photo). Please understand that this is a temporary lease. Child in advertisement must be returned, once he has outgrown his "destructive" phase. Owner reserves the right to demand return of said child if/when she regains her sanity. Warning, this child is what caused owner to loose her sanity in the first place.

I'm Grumpy...Seriously Grumpy

So today was one of those days. Woke up sweating in an eighty degree bedroom (we had a MASSIVE electric bill so we're trying not to run our air as much), but still, I was bound to not let it ruin my day, which it didn't. Fast forward to the boys taking a bath, they HAD to take in two buckets of toys to play with, in the tub. Not that big of a deal, just one more mess. Then I discovered several hundred ants on my bathroom counter that weren't there earlier this morning, I run downstairs to grab the ant spray in the kitchen and set off upstairs to commit a mass murder of the little creatures. I wipe their corpses with a paper towel and bury them in the toilet (too graphic? I'll tame it down). An hour goes by uneventful, and I put Abby down for her first nap of the day. The boys were playing nicely together, so I jumped online to check email etc. Then I hear those stomach dropping words coming out of Preston's mouth, "Carson, did you just cut your hair?". Enter a few choice words here, as I run out of the office, to find Carson with chunks of hair missing. He had found Preston's missing Kindergarten safety scissors. Why is it always on my watch that this happens? And why is it always the very front of his head? And why is it always to the scalp? So, he leaves me no other option, but to shave him bald again! (If any of you missed the last buzzing, Preston took clippers to his little brothers head almost a year ago and gave him a reverse mohawk). On the plus side, Preston needed a haircut too, so dragging out the clippers and scissors wasn't a complete waste. Bath time round 2. Now my tub is filled with hair. Then there was lunch, which resulted in me making Mac and Cheese. Starting to pour the milk and suspicious orange powder in the noodles, I realize I'm out of butter. Quick phone call to Trevor to tell him he's not eating out with his brothers for lunch, but stopping by the grocery store on his break. Poor guy only had 10 minutes to eat by the time he got through the store and traffic. Meanwhile, Abby wakes up and I've neglected to pick up the family room per recent events and proceed to pull a penny, a Chuck-E-Cheese ticket and one unidentifiable object from her mouth over the course of the next half hour. Relief sets in, as she goes down for her second nap. I put the boys down with a movie in my room and start folding laundry downstairs, basking in my abilities to handle the crisis that is motherhood. Above me, there is loud banging, which I could only assume is the boys jumping on my bed and launching themselves off of it, Carson calls it "flying", I run upstairs to end their fun and return downstairs, oh, by the way, it's now 82 degrees in the house and every trip upstairs gives me a mild heart attack. I admit I'm WAY out of shape. They desist the jumping and I return to the laundry. Carson starts crying and I run upstairs again. They had stopped jumping off my bed and had started wrestling on it. They had bonked heads and each was trying to blame the other. I bring them downstairs, to clean up their earlier messes, while I start dinner. Spaghetti. Easy, fast, edible. Both boys are thirsty and help themselves to pint sized bottles of blue gatorade. Yep, I end up mopping up spilled blue gatorade. Abby's awake and is jonesing for food (did I mention the numerous bottles made and six diapers I've changed?). I put her off with those little finger food things and call Trevor to stop at the store again, on his way home, to pick up french bread (which I would happily bypass but Trevor has to have bread when he eats pasta...addicted to carbs much?) By the time he gets home, I have the boys fed and am just wiping the green beans off Abby's face and start his garlic bread. He dissapears to the office where he starts his second of three fantasy football drafts. I send the boys upstairs again as I eat and start watching the Mariner/Angel game. By this time, I'm tired and even more hot from making dinner, but my mood drastically shifts, as the Mariners have a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning. Trevor finishes his draft and joins me only to remember he forgot to turn on his Uncle's air conditioning. We've been watching their house, while they've been gone camping, and we were supposed to cool off the house, before they got home tonight. He leaves with Carson and returns shortly. He just sits down as they call to say they've gotten home and could he come over and help them unload a few heavy things. I ask that he help me put the kiddies to bed first and we journey upstairs to find every matchbox car the boys own, plus the earlier tub toys spread all over our room. Preston has also opened the treadmill mat that we've never used so bits of plastic is now littered across the floor. He claims that it was Carson, which is impossible and we wrangle a confession out of him and ground him from video games, not for the mess but for the lying. Bedtime is taking too long so Trevor leaves and assures me it'll be 10 minutes. I put Abby down, help finish picking up toys, brushed the boys teeth, sang two songs, turned on the hall light, went downstairs, returned to turn on the bathroom light, went downstairs, returned to bring "Cruisin' McQueen" to Carson, went downstairs, returned to kill a spider in the ceiling corner, which required a step stool and toy sword to reach, gave Preston the freshly-used-then-cleaned sword to snuggle (I don't get it either) and finally got downstairs for the last time where the Mariners had lost their lead. Meanwhile, Trevor had been gone 45 minutes. I'm starting to get SUPER grumpy, this is what happens when I'm hungry, tired, hot or losing to Trevor's team. Tonight, I'm three of the four. When this happens, I tend to try to become a martyr, so I start on the dinner dishes. I proceed to the table which is covered in several hundred ants feasting on what's left of Carson's dinner. I choose to ignore this, as the ant spray is still upstairs in my bathroom, and I know it'll kill me to exert my body anymore. I do, however, finish the rest of the dishes and bail on the Mariners who are now losing 6-10. Trevor comes home and receives the blunt of all the frustration, heat, ant infestation and frankly, his team is winning and I was just a little bitter at that moment. We finish the game which is just salt in the wound and I am now hiding in the office, wallowing in self pity in front of my computer. I admit this venting feels good but as I read over what I've just written I realize I'm acting like a big, irrational baby and wouldn't you know, it makes me even grumpier.
Carson two days ago. We'd been growing out his hair surfer dude style.
He wasn't amused that I was going to send this picture to Daddy to "tell on him".

The "after" shot.

*P.S. I had Trevor proof read this to make sure I wasn't too whiny (I totally was) and to apologize for my outburst at him earlier (if I admit I've been crazy, he's more apt to forgive me).
We're now laughing at my expense and I realize...I'll take this crazy, chaotic life any day of the week (I still could do without the stairs though).
